Feb 1,10  An Absolutely Amazing Feat
In the world of hockey, there are “hat tricks” and there are “hat tricks”. The “hat trick” itself is, of course, a player scoring three times in one game. Variations on the “run of the mill” hat trick include the “natural hat trick”, or a player scoring three goals in succession; Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames had a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” (a goal, an assist and a fight) on Saturday night against the Oilers OR there is the Andrew Cogliano of the Edmonton Oilers “hat trick” of three overtime goals in three consecutive games in 2008.

When it comes to scoring three goals in one game however, the home ice of the K.I.J.H.L.’s Golden Rockets was the venue for possibly the most improbable of “hat tricks” this past Sunday afternoon when the Rockets hosted the Chase Chiefs.

Devon HOBBS of the Chiefs scored goals in the first, second and third periods of the game and, just to add some flavour, finished the game with six points. Now a six point game, (three goals and three assists), is something achieved maybe once in a career by a very gifted player however what makes THIS “hat trick” even more of a rarity is that each of his goals was scored with his team short-handed.

What are the odds of that happening? How would one even go about calculating that? The chances of one player getting three power play goals in one game (team has a numerical advantage due to the opposition serving a penalty or penalties) is probably not much different than just an ordinary hat trick, given that power plays employ a team’s best players for each opportunity.

98 short handed goals have been scored in the KIJHL to date, an average of 5.75 per team with each team completing an average of 42 games each. So then, the chances of having ONE PLAYER score half your years total in one game? Let’s just say, pretty steep odds!

Three “shortys” by one player has only happened ONCE in the N.H.L., (Theoren FLEURY for Calgary against St. Louis in 1991) and has happened at least twice in U.S. college hockey (both being the even rarer “natural” hat tricks) but this is believed to be the first time this rare feat has occurred in a KIJHL game, according to league officials.

HOBBS couldn’t believe that no one had done this in the KIJHL before. When asked if, while “the luck” was running hot, he would be willing to buy lottery tickets for friends (at the friend’s expense, of course), he advised he would be more than happy to.

Where is the puck that got HOBBS third goal on Sunday? “In my stall. I usually give my pucks to my dad but he has a lot now, I think he’s getting tired of finding places for them” said HOBBS. HOBBS dad MAY well want to add this one to his son’s collection but this is a puck that probably both the Chiefs and the League may decide needs a marginally more special place to rest.

The Chiefs would embark on a long 3 games in 3 nights to end the month of January. Friday night would see the Chiefs in Fernie to play the League leading Ghostriders(35-7-1). Final score Chiefs 7 Rockets 2… Hobbs 6 pts… Wood 3 pts… Riley Wall turned aside 21 shots for the win… Shots 23-23… Chiefs 3-10 on the Powerplay….6 of 7 on the penalty kill… 1st Star Devon Hobbs..2nd Star Jordan Wood… 3rd Star Kris Glinsbockel. The third goal would come on the powerplay from Wood again. That would be all for Eagles goaltender Joel Widen. In the 2nd the boys didn’t let up and before the period came to an end, it was a 5-2 lead with goals from #11 Colten DeFrias and Devon Hobbs with his 2nd of the night. The 3rd would see 2 more added by #23 Brock Balson shorthanded on a nice feed from DeFrias on a 2 on 1 rush. And Devon Hobbs would complete his hat trick with a powerplay goal. The Eagles would add 2 more but fell short, with the final score being Chiefs 7 Eagles 4… 1st Star Devon Hobbs with 5 pts…2nd Star Jordan Wood with 3 pts… Riley Wall with 20 saves for the Win… DeFrias 2 pts… Bentley 2pts…. Chiefs 2-8 on the powerplay.

On Saturday night at the Art Holding Memorial Arena, the 2nd half of the home and home would not disappoint. With the Eagles looking to avenge last nights loss, they came out hard. But the Home team would be equal to the task. Before the period was half over, the Chiefs were up 3-0! The 1st goal, a powerplay marker from #24 Jordan Wood, the 2nd also a powerplay goal from #19 David Harrison and the 3rd off a nice setup from Hobbs and Wood, saw #18 Tyson Bentley score his 1st goal in 21 games. The period would end 3-1. In the 2nd , #11 Colten DeFrias with his 2nd in as many nights, would score on a partial breakaway, shorthanded. In the 3rd period, #23 Brock Balson would put away the game with the final goal of the contest. Jan 19,10  Chiefs Split on the Weekend
Friday night would see the Chiefs on the road in Revelstoke for a game against the Grizzlies. The game started out the Chiefs way with a goal off the stick of #27 Darren Pittendreigh on the powerplay. The Grizz would answer with a powerplay goal of their own, before #13 Devon Hobbs scored. Revy scored a late goal before the period ended to even the score at 2 . In the second Revelstoke scored twice before #6 Brett Laird and #23 Brock Balson scored, both on the powerplay to even the game at 4. Off to the third, it seemed as though whoever got the last powerplay would win and sure enough. Revelstoke with yet another powerplay marker that would hold up to be the gamewinner. Grizzlies 5 Chiefs 4....Shots Chiefs 34..Grizz 32... #25 Josh Hartley 3rd Star with 3 pts...Hobbs 2 pts...Laird 2 pts... #24 Jordan Wood would see his 13 game point streak come to an end. On Saturday the last place Grand Forks Border Bruins came to town for their only visit of the year. In the first period the Bruins played anything but like a last place team. The Chiefs outshot their opponent 22-2 but could not score. In the 2nd, a different story. With 5 straight goals, 2 from #23 Brock Balson,2 from #24 Jordan Wood & 1 from #13 Devon Hobbs it was 5-0 before the Bruins would respond with one of their own on a 2 on 1 rush. Jan 13,10  FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME WITH STORM HEATED
It would be the final regular season meeting between the Chase Chiefs and their arch rival, Kamloops Storm, so you knew it would be a heated affair. On his first ever shift in a Chase Chiefs jersey, newly acquired #9 Ian Grant would score his 1st KIJHL goal. Before the period would end it was the Home Team up 3-0. #21 Jordie Cool and Grant with his 2nd,, chased Storm goaltender Anthony Manfredi from the net. In the 2nd period, Kamloops would score once before #24 Jordan Wood and #4 Doug Chadwick would score to increase the lead to 5-1. The Storm would tally once in the third but Riley Wall would shut the door the rest of the way. Final, Chiefs 5 Storm 2 …1st Star #9 Ian Grant, 2nd Star #11 Colton De Frias ,3rd Star #24 Jordan Wood….#1 Riley Wall made 29 saves earning the win… De Frias 3pts..MacKenzie 2pts…. Chase 1-8 PP Kamloops 1-6 PP.

On Sunday, the Chiefs traveled to Armstrong for an afternoon tilt with the North Okanagan Knights. This also was the final regular season meeting of these 2 teams. The Chiefs would strike first on a shot from the point by #22 Kevin Monfette. The Knights answered shortly after, but #24 Jordan Wood restored the 1 goal lead before the 1st period ended. With a blast off the rush, #21 Jordie Cool beat Chris Solecki high blocker side. Which turned out to be the only goal of the 2nd period. Late in the third with Chase up 2 goals, there was a bit of a flurry by North Ok scoring 2 quick goals and its all tied up. Regulation time would solve nothing. So off to overtime and less than a minute in, Jordan Wood pounced on a rebound and buried his 20th of the year and 2nd OT winner of the season. Final Score Chiefs 4- Knights 3 OT… Wood 3pts… Balson 2pts… Renner 2 pts… Bytelaar turned aside 19 shots for the win… 1st Star Jordan Bytelaar ,2nd Star Jordan Wood. Chiefs 0-3 PP…Knights 0-1 PP
