Feb 19,10 Chase Chiefs Players of the Week
I thought it would be an appropriate time to submit an article on my time with the Chase Chiefs hockey club leading into the playoffs . I have now been the head coach for almost 12 weeks total. In that time I have had to spend as much time with our players and staff to get to know them and vice versa. As a coach you have to create a bond with your staff that is based on trust honesty and respect for each other. We really need to step back and appreciate how much these people do for your hockey club day in and day out! These are volunteer positions and you talk about "for the love of the game" and for the kids to live a dream. We practice at least 3 days per week, play at least 2 games per week end and all the preparation and attention that goes into that from your entire staff members is amazing. Glen Sather made a very valid point years ago when I was coaching early on that has stuck with me til today! In order for you to be successful as a coach you need to surround yourself with successful people in your supporting cast. Every week we pick a player of the week .
My intentions are always to give recognition to any one who gives you commitment and effort! Seeing we have just completed our regular season play and in my mind our players of the week are without a doubt the entire Chase Chiefs staff of volunteers! You have done a superb job and your professionalism is second to none. You make my task at hand in games and practices run very smooth because of your ability to take care of these kids on a moments notice. I have been very fortunate to have been associated with superb people and staff members thru out my almost 7 year stay in the KIJHL and I have learned the value of what they mean to our success!
I also want to make known of the fact that you can only do so much unless you are supplied with the proper tools and equipment to be very good at your job. I have seen many junior "A" & "B" programs over the years, and the Chase Chiefs owner has done a absolute first class job in supplying everyone with what ever they need to get the job done! You are only as good as the people who surround you ! On behalf of the players and coaching staff we thank you "Lars" "Julio" and Dr. Wayne Quinn for your time and commitment thru out the regular season and into our playoff run!
Truly
Brad Fox
Coach
Feb 16,10 Chiefs Finish off Regular Season
The Chiefs went into their final weekend of the regular season looking to gain some momentum for their playoff drive. Unfortunately the Sicamous Eagles had other ideas. The Chiefs put forth probably their worst effort of the year, and it showed with the Eagles winning 6-0. That would be the first and only time that Chase had not scored a goal in a game this year.
On Saturday the Princeton Posse came to town looking to sew up 2nd place and a bye in the 1st round. The hometown boys jumped out to a 1st period lead with 2 goals off the stick of Jordan Wood, both on the powerplay. But it was all Posse after that with a final score of Posse 5 Chiefs 2. Shots on goal.. Posse 38 Chiefs 29 ….2-8 on the powerplay and 7-7 on the penalty kill. Wood 2 goals… Hobbs 2 assists. Jordan Wood 2nd Star. Jordan Bytelaar stopped 33 of 38 shots.
There were a few Chiefs’ records set during the year:
#13 Devon Hobbs became the all time leading scorer with 52 goals, 82 assists and 134 pts. All 3 totals being records.
#13 Devon Hobbs also set a KIJHL record with a hat trick, with all 3 goals being scored while his team was shorthanded.
#27 Darren Pittendreigh is the all time leader in games played with 150.
#22 Kevin Monfette & Darren Pittendreigh also played in all 50 games this season.
#24 Jordan Wood is now the single season leader in goals scored with 29.
#24 Jordan Wood tied a record for powerplay goals in a season with 11 (David Killip 07/08) and leads with 8 game winning goals.
#24 Jordan Wood scored the Chiefs 500th goal during regular season on Dec 20,2009.
Feb 10,10 Chiefs Clinch Home Ice in the First Round
The Penticton Lakers (12-28-4) would roll into town on Friday night looking to avoid a sweep by the hometown boys. The Chiefs(25-18-3) 5-0 against the Lakers would find themselves down early on a shorthanded goal in the first minute of the game. #8 Scott Renner and #21 Jordie Cool would both score in the second to take the lead. In the third, #16 Marc McKenzie, on a great individual effort shorthanded, would steal the puck and score on a breakaway. Penticton would score 1 more but the Chiefs would hang on for a 3-2 victory and a perfect 6-0 vs the Lakers.#6 Laird 2pts… #1 Riley Wall with 35 saves… 6 for 6 on the penalty kill…
On Saturday the Chiefs would travel to Princeton to take on the Posse. The game started out great with goals in the first by #13 Devon Hobbs and #15 Chad Patterson. The 2nd would see the Posse score first. The Chiefs would respond with 2 goals in 17 seconds,by #19 David Harrison and #11 Colton DeFrias, to stake a 4-1 lead. But it didn’t last long until the Posse would score 2 goals in 14 seconds to cut the lead back to 1.In the 3rd, Princeton would score the only goal. Feb 6,10 KIJHL January Player of the Month
Congratulations to #13 Devon Hobbs for being awarded January Player of the Month. "Hobbsie" played 8 games during the month where he accumulated 9 goals & 12 Assists for 21 Points. He recorded 2 hat tricks, 1 of which is a KIJHL record, being all 3 goals were scored while his team was shorthanded.
Feb 1,10 An Absolutely Amazing Feat
In the world of hockey, there are “hat tricks” and there are “hat tricks”. The “hat trick” itself is, of course, a player scoring three times in one game. Variations on the “run of the mill” hat trick include the “natural hat trick”, or a player scoring three goals in succession; Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames had a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” (a goal, an assist and a fight) on Saturday night against the Oilers OR there is the Andrew Cogliano of the Edmonton Oilers “hat trick” of three overtime goals in three consecutive games in 2008.
When it comes to scoring three goals in one game however, the home ice of the K.I.J.H.L.’s Golden Rockets was the venue for possibly the most improbable of “hat tricks” this past Sunday afternoon when the Rockets hosted the Chase Chiefs.
Devon HOBBS of the Chiefs scored goals in the first, second and third periods of the game and, just to add some flavour, finished the game with six points. Now a six point game, (three goals and three assists), is something achieved maybe once in a career by a very gifted player however what makes THIS “hat trick” even more of a rarity is that each of his goals was scored with his team short-handed.
What are the odds of that happening? How would one even go about calculating that? The chances of one player getting three power play goals in one game (team has a numerical advantage due to the opposition serving a penalty or penalties) is probably not much different than just an ordinary hat trick, given that power plays employ a team’s best players for each opportunity.
98 short handed goals have been scored in the KIJHL to date, an average of 5.75 per team with each team completing an average of 42 games each. So then, the chances of having ONE PLAYER score half your years total in one game? Let’s just say, pretty steep odds!
Three “shortys” by one player has only happened ONCE in the N.H.L., (Theoren FLEURY for Calgary against St. Louis in 1991) and has happened at least twice in U.S. college hockey (both being the even rarer “natural” hat tricks) but this is believed to be the first time this rare feat has occurred in a KIJHL game, according to league officials.
HOBBS couldn’t believe that no one had done this in the KIJHL before. When asked if, while “the luck” was running hot, he would be willing to buy lottery tickets for friends (at the friend’s expense, of course), he advised he would be more than happy to.
Where is the puck that got HOBBS third goal on Sunday? “In my stall. I usually give my pucks to my dad but he has a lot now, I think he’s getting tired of finding places for them” said HOBBS. HOBBS dad MAY well want to add this one to his son’s collection but this is a puck that probably both the Chiefs and the League may decide needs a marginally more special place to rest.

Feb 1,10 Tough road trip to the Kootenays
The Chiefs would embark on a long 3 games in 3 nights to end the month of January. Friday night would see the Chiefs in Fernie to play the League leading Ghostriders(35-7-1). The Chiefs would fall behind early and would not be able to claw their way back. Fernie 5 Chase 3…. Shots Chiefs 32 Fernie 30… Hobbs 2 pts… Chiefs 2-9 on the PP… Attendance 1,077 fans.
Saturday it was on to Kimberley to take on the Dynamiters(21-17-4). The Chiefs were looking to take advantage of an injury riddled Nitro’s team but would go down to defeat 5-2. Shots Kim 37 Chase 30.
The final stop of the trip would be Golden (25-19-0) to try and finish off the road trip with a Win. The boys knew they had to put in a better effort than the last two games to be successful. They did not disappoint. The first period was barely 3 minutes old and the Chiefs were up by 2. #21 Jordie Cool unassisted and a shorthanded goal by #13 Devon Hobbs. The Rockets would even the score before #24 Jordan Wood on the Powerplay, would regain the lead. In the 2nd there was no letting up. The Chiefs scored 3 unanswered goals to go up 6-2. Devon Hobbs with his 2nd shorty of the night, #10 Kris Glinsbockel and #6 Brett Laird, both on the powerplay. The 3rd would see only one goal scored, but once again, it was Hobbsie shorthanded, with his third of the night. A feat unmatched in the KIJHL, a hat trick with all 3 goals shorthanded!!! Final score Chiefs 7 Rockets 2… Hobbs 6 pts… Wood 3 pts… Riley Wall turned aside 21 shots for the win… Shots 23-23… Chiefs 3-10 on the Powerplay….6 of 7 on the penalty kill… 1st Star Devon Hobbs..2nd Star Jordan Wood… 3rd Star Kris Glinsbockel. The Chiefs (25-18-3) are 6-4 in their last 10 and seem to be on a collision course to face their arch rivals the Kamloops Storm in the first round of the playoffs.

The Chiefs would respond with 3 goals of their own. #13 Devon Hobbs would strike with a shorthanded marker. Then #24 Jordan Wood would score to go up 2-1 midway thru the period. The third goal would come on the powerplay from Wood again. That would be all for Eagles goaltender Joel Widen. In the 2nd the boys didn’t let up and before the period came to an end, it was a 5-2 lead with goals from #11 Colten DeFrias and Devon Hobbs with his 2nd of the night. The 3rd would see 2 more added by #23 Brock Balson shorthanded on a nice feed from DeFrias on a 2 on 1 rush. And Devon Hobbs would complete his hat trick with a powerplay goal. The Eagles would add 2 more but fell short, with the final score being Chiefs 7 Eagles 4… 1st Star Devon Hobbs with 5 pts…2nd Star Jordan Wood with 3 pts… Riley Wall with 20 saves for the Win… DeFrias 2 pts… Bentley 2pts…. Chiefs 2-8 on the powerplay.
On Saturday night at the Art Holding Memorial Arena, the 2nd half of the home and home would not disappoint. With the Eagles looking to avenge last nights loss, they came out hard. But the Home team would be equal to the task. Before the period was half over, the Chiefs were up 3-0! The 1st goal, a powerplay marker from #24 Jordan Wood, the 2nd also a powerplay goal from #19 David Harrison and the 3rd off a nice setup from Hobbs and Wood, saw #18 Tyson Bentley score his 1st goal in 21 games. The period would end 3-1. In the 2nd , #11 Colten DeFrias with his 2nd in as many nights, would score on a partial breakaway, shorthanded. In the 3rd period, #23 Brock Balson would put away the game with the final goal of the contest. Final score Chiefs 5 Eagles 1 for a sweep of the Eagles in the home and home series.….Hobbs 2 pts… DeFrias 2 pts… Wood 2 pts… Riley Wall with 30 saves for back to back victories…1st Star Colten DeFrias…2nd Star Kris Glinsbockel…3rd Star Riley Wall and honorable mention to #26 Mike “Marty” Misener with possibly his best game of the year.
